Abstract
It is the purpose of this study to help understand the disease pattern in the pediatric f The survey was made mostly by the Korean Pediatric Association during the period o 1983 to 1984 with the help from 43 pediatric training hospitals throughout Korea. The studies were made from the total of 67,550 pediatric inpatients under 15 years of s the distribution of the disease by age and sex according to system. The frequency of disease by system was as follows; disease of gastrointestinal tract: 28.42% disease of genitourinary tract: 8.06% congenital heart disease: 4.8% disease of the blood: 2.68% neoplastic and neoplasm like lesion: 1.86% 1. Disease of gastrointestinal tract; The number of disease of gastrointestinal tract were 1,197 (28.42%) out of 67,550 inp£ sex ratio was 1.79:1 in favor of the male. The most frequent age group was between 1 r year of age as 32% and the least group was under 1 month of age as 6.26%. The frequency of diseases was as follows respectively; 1) acute gastroenteritis: 52.84% a) viral infection: 29.93% b) bacterial infection: 20.57% 2) hepatobiliary tract disease: 20.44% acute hepatitis: 15.8% a) type A: 9.75% b) type B: 6.05% 3) intussusception: 7.73% 4) inguinal hernia: 5.07% 5) congenital anomalies: 3.28% 6) anaphylactoid purpura: 2.80% 7) motility disorders: 1.65% 8) intestinal obstruction: 1.08% 9) acute appendicitis: 1.06% 2. Disease of the blood The number of hematologic disorder patients were 1,788 (2.68%) out of 66,825 inpatients and the male outnumbered the female group as 1.86:1. The age between 1 and 5 years old group had the most of 30.82%. The percentage of the diseases was as follows in order of frequency: 1) iron deficiency anemia: 38.93% 2) ITP: 13.09% 3) physiologic anemia: 10.07% 4) acquired aplastic anemia: 7.21% 5) hemorrhagic disease of the newborn: 5.03% 6) hemophilia: 4.36% 7) DIC: 3.64% 3. Neoplastic and neoplasm like lesion The number of neoplastic and neoplasm like patients were 1,246 (1.86%) out of 66,825 and sex ratio 1.7:1 the male outnumbering the female. The most frequent age group was between 1 and 5 years old as 40.77%. The frequency of the diseases was shown below respectively; 1) leukemia: 45.99% a) acute leukemia: 43.74% b) chronic myelocytic leukemia: 2.24% 2) hemangioma: 12.2% 3) lymphoma: 8.59% 4) neuroblastoma: 6.7% 5) Wilm’s tumor: 6.18% 6) lymphangioma: 3.85% 7) neoplasm of Liver: 3.45% 4. Congenital heart disease The frequency of CHD (congenital heart disease) was 4.8%, 3,541 out of 73,801, and sex ratio was male:female, 1.29:1. One and five years of age group showed the most of 34.17%. The order of frequency of the diseases was as follows; 1) ventricular septal defect: 42.33% 2) tetralogy of Fallot: 11.97% 3) patent ductus arteriosus: 11.18% 4) atrial septal defect: 8.3% 5) transposition of great arteries: 3.81% 6) pulmonary stenosis: 3.22% 7) double outlet of right ventricle: 2.32% 8) pulmonary atresia: 1.24% 9) abnormal position of heart: 1.16% 10) tricuspid atresia: 0.9% 5. Disease of genitourinary system The number of urinary system diseases were 4,087 (8.06%) among 50,712 inpatients and the sex ratio was 1.54:1, male over female group. The most frequent age group was between 5 and 10 years of age as 33.96%. The frequency of diseases was as follows; 1) urinary tract infection: 33.86% 2) acute glomerulonephritis: 27.53% 3) nephrotic syndrome: 12.63% 4) henoch-Schonlein nephritis: 5.9% 5) benign recurrent hematuria: 5.78% 6) renal failure: 3.16%
