Abstract
During the 11 years of period from October, 1957 to October, 1968, 380 cases of children with severe anemia (Hemoglobin under 7.0 gm%) were observed in the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Hospital. The causes of severe anemia were investigated. 1.The overall incidence of sereve anemia was 1.0% ef all pediatric patients visited the pediatric Department. 2. The ratio of male to female was approximately 3:1. 3. Severe anemia occurred most frequently in younger children under 2 years of age, because of high incidence of leukemia, iron deficiency anemia and anemia due to infection in this age group. There was a second peak between the ages of 8 to 10, because of aplastic anemia and parasitic infestations which were common in this age group. 4. The most common causes of severe anemia were leukemia, anemia due to various infections, aplastic anemia and iron deficiency anemia. In patients with leukemia and aplastic anemia the degree of anemia was most severe. 5.The causes of anemia of each group were analized.
