Present Status and Problems of Weaning.

This study was conducted to find out the present status and problems of weaning in Korea through the 200 infants who visited Maternal-Child Health Center, Soon Chun Hyang University from Nov. 85 to June 86. The result and problems obtained from the study are summarized as follows: 1) Most of the infants were under 12 month of age(86.5%). 2) Most of the fathers belonged to 30-39 years of age(63.5%) and mothers belonged to 20-29 years of age(68%). 3) Most of the fathers(66.5%) and a half of the mothers(51.5%) were graduated from university. 4) The types of feeding were cow’s milk(41%)» cow’s+breast milk(30.5%) and breast milk in decreasing order. 5) The causes of cow’s milk feeding were insufficient secretion of breast milk(70.6%) and for occupation of mother(20.3%). 6) Weaning was started at 3 months of age(60%), and ended at 12 months of age(59.0%). In the most of the babies(56.0%), breast feeding was ended by 6 months of age but in some(37.5%) by 12 months of age. 7) The main source of knowledge about weaning was books(61.5%), and the next was hospitals and well baby clinics(15.0%). 8) Responses to supplementary foods were good in 82.5% of babies, but some reactions were noticed in 17.5% of babies such as diarrhea, vomiting and constipation in decreasing order. 9) The supplementary foods were commercial(47.5%) and home-made one(30.0%). The interval between new supplementary foods were 2-3 days(52.5%) and 5-7 days(31.5%). 10) The most prevalent time to give supplementary foods was 10:00 AM(59.5%), and before milk feeding(72%). 11) Most of the mothers started weaning with only one kind of food(94%) with 1 tea-spoonful amount(67.5%) of fruits(87.5%). 12) Eggs were given after complete boiling(55.5%) because of low allergic reaction(19%). 13) Among meats, beef was tried first(89.5%) and the mothers(70%) started weaning without regarding to seasons.
