Abstract
A clinical study was performed on 26 cases of splenectomized children who had been seen at the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Hospital, during the period of 7 years 7 months from January 1978 to July 1985. The results were as follows: 1) Primary diseases were hereditary spherocytosis (8 cases), Hodgkin disease for staging laparotomy (8 cases), chronic ITP (5 cases), trauma (4 cases), and cavernous hemangioma of spleen (1 case). 2) Seventeen cases were boys and nine cases were girls. 3) Age distribution at splenectomy was as follows; Four cases were under 4 years, 9 cases between 5 to 9 11/12 years, and 13 cases over 10 years. The mean age was 8.7 years. 4) In twenty-four patients, prophylaxis against infection was given. The mode of prophylaxis was benzathine penicillin monthly injection in 19 cases, and daily oral penicillin in 5 cases. 5) There were four patients who readmitted because of infection. One patient with no prophylaxis had sepsis with meningitis and the other had pneumonia, FUO and cellulitis. These patients were recovered from infection after antibiotic treatment.
