Outbreak of Non-typhoidal Salmonellosis in neonates |

Abstract |
During the period from Jun. 24, 1991 to Aug. 31, 1991, we experienced 6 cases of non-typhoidal salmonella and 18 cases with symptoms suggesting salmonellosis.
The results obtained were as follows;
1) Mean age on admission was 9¡¾6 days and mean body weight was 3.3¡¾0.3kg. All cases were fullterm neonate.
2) 12 pts were transferred from nursery becasuse of diarrhea (50.0%), 7 pts were readmitted after discharge from nursery (29.2%), and 1 pt was case of onser during admission in nICU(4.2%)
4) Nature of diarrhea was loose(29.2%), watery(45.8%), or mucoid(25.0%), and mean duration of diarrhea was 11¡¾6 days
5) Culture yielded non-typhoidal salmonella in 4 cases(16.6%) in blood, 3 cases(12.5%) in urine, 1 cases(4.2%) in stool, and 1 case(4.2%) in joint fluid.
6) On ABGA, metabolic acidosis developed in 83.4% and mean pH was 7.22¡¾0.13
7) Susceptability to antibiotics showed sensitivity to amikacin (77.8%), gentamicin(55.6%), clindamycin(55.6%), shereas resistancy to ampicillin(77.8%), chloramphenicol(66.7%), and kanamycin(66.7%)
8) There was no expired case, and septic arthritis in the left shoulder joint developed in 1 case(4.2%) as a complication
9) All possible endeavours to search for the infection sources failed to discover the index cases on this occasion. |
