J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):847-854.   Published online July 15, 2002
Purpose : Long term hospitalized infants in neonatal intensive care units(NICUs) are prone to systemic infection. It is important to differentiate systemic candidiasis from systemic bacterial infection early in the course. Thus, in this study, we have compared clinical characteristics of systemic candidiasis and systemic bacterial infection, in premature low birth weight infants. Methods : Retrospective chart review of the medical...
Thymus Size and Its Relationship to Perinatal Diseases; Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Intrauterine Growth Retardation
Sun Mi Chung, Woo Taek Kim
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):855-861.   Published online July 15, 2002
Purpose : Thymus size can be affected by several factors and perinatal diseases can be estimated by its size. The purpose of this study was to search for a relationship between cardiothymic/ thoracic(CT/T) ratio and perinatal diseases such as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome(RDS) and intrauterine growth retardation(IUGR) by measuring the width of the cardiothymic shadow at the level of the...
Detection of Helicobacter pylori by Pre-embedding Immunoelectron Microscopy -Comparison with Immunoblotting Method

J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):862-874.   Published online July 15, 2002
Purpose : We tried to evaluate whether the detection rate of Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsy specimens could be improved by using pre-embedding immunoelectron microscopy. Methods : A total of 119 children who complained of upper gastrointestinal symptoms were endoscoped at the Gyeongsang National University Hospital from July, 1996 to July, 1999. Five biopsy specimens(three for urease test, one for...
Effect of CpG Oligodeoxynucleotides on Airways of Mice with Established Airways Inflammation
Hei-Won Hwang, Su-Jin Kim, Won-Duk Kim, Sung-Min Cho, Dong-Suk Lee, Sung-Min Choi
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):875-883.   Published online July 15, 2002
Purpose : Airways eosinophilia and increased IgE, characteristic features of asthma, result from a predominant Th2 response. In this study, we investigated the effect of CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) on the inhibition of airways eosinophilia in mice with established airway inflammation. We also investigated the immunological mechanisms involved. Methods : Groups of BALB/c mice were sensitized intradermally with ovalbumin(OVA). At week 10,...
The Effect of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Gene Polymorphism in Children with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis
Chang Woo Ha, Ji Young Kim, Jeong Nyeo Lee, Jeong Hwa Lee, Woo Yeong Chung
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):884-890.   Published online July 15, 2002
Purpose : Henoch-Schonlein purpura(HSP) nephritis has been reported to vary from 25 to 50% among HSP patients and is a common cause of chronic glomerulonephritis in children. In our study, we evaluated the distribution and the association of the Insertion/Deletion(I/D) polymorphism of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) gene with clinical manifestations, particularly proteinuria in children with HSP nephritis, compared with that in...

A Case of Congenital Partial Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus
Eun Ha Mo, In Hye Nam, Min Ja Chung, Jae Hong Yu
J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):902-905.   Published online July 15, 2002
The most common form of genetic nephrogenic diabetes insipidus(NDI), a rare inherited disorder, is congenital and is transmitted in an X-linked recessive mode. It is refractory to the antidiuretic effect of normal to moderately increased levels of plasma arginine vasopressin(AVP) but, in some cases, may respond to high levels of the hormone or its analogue, deamino-D-arginine vasopressin(DDAVP). X-linked congenital NDI...

Marshall-Smith syndrome is characterized by a triad of facial dysmorphism, failure to thrive and accelerated osseous maturation. We report a one-month-old male infant with of this rare syndrome, with laryngeal anomalies who died at 6 months of age with pneumonia. This is the first case of Marshall-Smith syndrome in Korea.

In this a case 15- month-old boy with acute myeloid leukemia was treated with umbilical cord blood transplant from an HLA-3 loci mismatched unrelated donor. Granulocyte recovery greater than 500/mm3 occurred at day 49, and...

J Korean Pediatr Soc. 2002;45(7):917-922.   Published online July 15, 2002
An unbalanced translocation is frequently the result of inheritance of an unbalanced haploid set from a parent with a balanced translocation. Families in which one parent is a balanced translocation carrier fall into the following classes : Those in which none of the possible abnormal offsprings is viable; Those in which one type of offspring, usually the one with the...

Perinatal atrial flutter is a potentially lethal arrhythmia. Management of this disorder is difficult and controversial. Fetal atrial flutter is a serious and life threatening rhythm disorder particulary when it causes hydrops; it may be associated with fetal death or neurological damage. Although the initial episode of flutter may be difficult to control, recurrence of atrial flutter after successful resolution...
