Abstract
Seventy-five strains of shigella were isolated from 214 specimens feces of suspected patients among children in Taegu area during the period from July to September 1969. The most predominant group was Sh. flexneri (85. 3%). The most frequent serotype of this group was la with 28.0% of all strains tested, followed by 2a (11.9%), lb(10.7%) and 3b(6.7%) in decreasing order of frequency, and also serotype X and Y were isolated 4 and 7 strains, respectively. Strains sensitive to ampicillin (AP) were most predominant (92.2%) and the numbers decreased in the order of sensitive strains to furadantin (FD) 87.5%, vibramycin (VM) 56.2% and kanamycin (KM) 54.7% when minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was defined as table 1. However, strains sensitive to kanamycin (100%) were most predominant when MIC was defined as 12.5 mcg/ml, and the numbers decreased in the order of sensitive strains to AP(92.2%), FD (87.5%), NM (84.4%) ad VM (56.2%). Fifty to eighty-five percent of strains were resistant to antibiotics commouly used (streptomycin, aureomycin, terramycin and Chloromycetin). Most of strains (90.6%) were resistant to four or more antibiotics tested with the most predominant numbers of resistant strains to seven drugs.
