Abstract
e A study of eosinophilia in premature infants was performed to determine if eosinophilia could be an index of weight gain in premature infants. Thirteen premature infants born at 30-37 week's gestation and cared at N.M.C. from Jan, *80 to Aug. ’80 were included in this study. The results were as follows: 1. Eosinophilia (>700/mm3) was documented in 69.2% (9/13). 2.There noted no significant difference in frequency of eosinophilia between the groups of weight 1,000-1,499gm and 1,500-1,999gm. 3.Eosinophilia was mild (700-999/mm3) in 2 cases and moderate (1,000-2, 999/mm3) in 7 cases. Marked eosinophilia (^3,000/mm3) was not note d. 4.The average time of onset of eosinophilia was between the day 17 to 19 (2. 5weeks) from nadir weight and the mean peak eosinophil count marked 878±266/mm3^ (mean+S.D.) on the day 24 to 26 (3. 5weeks) from nadir weight. 5.Apparent association was noted between the weight gain and the initial eosinophilia (r=0.85, p<0. 01). No significant relationship was found between the weight gain and the peak eosinophil count (r = 0. 28, p〉0. 05).
