Abstract
Clinical study was made on 125 newborn infants who were suffered from ABO hemolyti(diseases at Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital during the pericd cf 3 years frcm January 1980 to December 1982. The following results were obtained 1)Of 9,805 liveborn delveries, 3,094(31.6%) mothers had 0 type blood group and 1,425 (14.5%) neonates bad ABO inccmpatibility. Of these 125 necnates suffered frcm hemolytic disease which counted 1.3% of total delivery and 8.8% of AEO incompatibility. 2) Of 125 ABO hemolytic disease 69(55.2%) were AO bleed type and 56(44.8%) were BO blood type. There were 73 males/58.4%) and 52 females(41. C%), the ratio of male to female being 1.4: 1. 3)There were no correlation between the incidence cf AEO temolytic disease and gestational age or birth, weight. 4)Positive direct Coombs reaction were noted in 37.4% and there were no correlation between Coombs reaction and blood group. 5)The value of cord hemoglobin and bilirubin revealed no significant difference between two blood groups. 6)The development of jaundice within the first 24 hrs of life noted in 69.6%. 7)Serum bilirubin were above 18 mg/dl in 38 cases(30.4%) and above 21 mg/dl in 17 cases (13.6%). Peak level of serum bilirubin was noted within 4 days of life in 81 cases(64.8%) and within 5 days of life in 109 cases (87.2%). 8)The clinical findings were jaundice(92.8%), anemia(40.8%), hepatomegaly(12.8%), splenomegaly(5.6%), and spherocytosis(7.2%). 9)Exchange transfusion was done in 16.8% which counted 24.7% of total exchange transfusions (85 cases) done in our hospital during the study period.
