Abstract
A clinical study of neonatal skin was carried out from March 1983 to November 1983. This study sought to investigate the incidence and clinical features of neonatal skin abnormalities. 729 neonates of Seoul National University Hospital were included in this study and the
results
can be summarized as follows; 1) Mongolian spots were observed in 80.2%, occuring most frequently in the sacral area. 2) Salmon patches were observed in 31.8%, the nape of the neck being the most common site. 3) Pigmented lesions were observed in 1.7% but a histopathologic study was not done. 4) Portwine stains were observed in 1.0%. 5) Erythema toxicum neonatorum were observed in 33.3% mainly on the trunk and the extremities, The majority of these appeared within 1 〜3 days after birth and disappeared 3〜7days after birth. 6) Skin tags were observed in 1.9% mainly on the anterior part of the chest. 7) Auricular fistulae were observed in 6 neonates (0.8%). 2 cases were bilatral and there was a tendancy for the fistulae to appear more frequently on the left side of the ear in females. 8) Accessory auricles were observed in neonates(0.4%) and 1 case was bilateral. 9) Cutis marmorata were observed in 3.6%.
