Abstract
A clinical study was done in 42,906 cases of the newborn infant born at Busan National University and II Sin Womens Hospital Delivery Room about congenital anomalies for 6 years from Jan. 1977. The results were summarized as follows: 1)Among total newborns, congenital anomalies were 1,845 cases(4.3%) and the frequency of male congenital anomalies was 5.4% and that of female was 3.1%. Males were affected more frequently than females. 2)The incidence according to birth weight, 8.0% in low-birth weight infant was higher than 4.3% in high-birth infant and 3.9% in normal-birth weight infant. The frequency according to gestational age, 6.7% in premature infant was much higher than 4.7% in postterm infant and 3.7% in full-term infant. The incidence according to birth weight in each gestational age, the same tendency was observed. 3)The frequency of congenital anomalies in stillbirth was 10.8% and higher than in 4.1 % in live-birth. The incidence of congenital anomalies in the newborns of multiple pregnancies was 5.2% and higher than newborn of single pregnancy. There was no significant difference in the frequency of congenital anomalies according to tne age of mother and frequency of delivery. 4)In the organ involved, the anomalies, of digestive system were most common(26.9%) and then genitourinary system, skin, musculoskeletal system in the order. In the incidence of disease, cleft lip and cleft palate were most common(10.1%) and cryptorchidism (10%), congenital heart disease(7.9%), tongue tie(6.0%), hemangioma(5.6%), hydrocele(5.6%), in the order. 5)Multiple anomalies were 12.6% of total anomalies, and the most common form was two congenital anomalies involved the two organ system. Among total anomalies, major congenital anomalies were 39.5% and the ratio of major congenital anomalies to total newborns was 1.7% and that of minor congenital anomalies was 2.6%. 6)In the stillbirths, major congenital anomalies of CNS(i.e., anencephaly(42.3%), hydrocephalus, encephalocele) were common and congenital heart disease(13.3%), tracheoesoph ageal fistula(8.9%) were observed.
