Abstract
143 cases(106 males, 37 females) with asthmatic children (aged from 54/i2 to 144/i2 year old) were performed pulmonary function test before and after exercise to detect exerciseinduced asthma (El A). If peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR), checked with Wright’s peak flowmeter, decreased 15% cr more after exercise loading test (up and down stair method for 6 minutes), the result was considered to be positive. 77 and 66 cases were confirmed as to have EIA and non-EIA repectively. The results were as follows; 1) Base line value of %PEFR(93.88%) was decreased markedly(58.89%) after exercise in EIA cases but minimal change of% PEFR, ranged from 89.49% to 93,47%, was noted after exercise in non-EIA cases. 2) Mean post-exercise decrease of % PEFR were 5.76% and 33.82% in non-EIA cases and EIA cases repectively. 3) Significant decrease of %PEFR was noted at 5 minutes after exercise in EIA cases (51.9%). 4) 55.8% of EIA cases could not return to base line value of PEFR untill 30 minutes post-exercise period. 5) 69.2% and 70.6% of EIA cases were effective to prevent EIA by the pretreatment with Tranilast and cromolyn respectively. It can be concluded that proper preventive measures should be given to EIA cases as early as possible because of markedly decreased pulmonary function after exercise.
