Abstract
We made clinical and statistical observation of 90 very low birth weight infants who were admitted at Soonchunhyang university hospital during the 6 years period from January 1985 through December 1990. The result obtained were as follows: 1) The incidence of very low birth weight infant during 6 years period was 0.68%, and the mortality rate was 488/1000 very low birth weight infants. 2) There was no obvious decrement of annual incidence of very low birth weight infans after 1988. 3) The sex ratio for very low brith weight in male to female, was 1: 0.97. The moratlity rate was 1.94 times more greater in males than females. 4) According to the birth weight, marked increase of mortality rate was observed in infants whose weight were more decreased at birth. The case of smallest very low birth weight infant alive at present was 650 grams. 사 5) The range of gestational age of very low birth weight infants was from 23 to 42 weeks, most predominatly between 27〜30weeks as 56cases (62.2%). The mortality rate was decreased with gestational aging. And the case of shortest gestational age alive at present was 25 weeks. 6) Distribution of very low birth weight infants by maternal age, was more frequant on 25 〜 34 years old(82.2%), but incidence was most predominently between 35—39 years old(2.6%). 7) The most of delivery types were NSVD(76.7%). 8) Major maternal risk factors were premature rupture of membrane in 41 cases (40.5%), and there were incompetent internal os of cervix (9.9%), preeclampsia (8.9%), twin (7.9%), and so on. 9) Appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infant were 83.3%, small for gestational age (SGA) infant were 16.7%, and there was no LGA. 10) Only 11.1% of neonatal death occured within 24 hours after brith, but there were more frequently between 8~28 days after brith. 11) Observed morbidities by system were respiratory tract in 92 cases (26.9%) gastrointestinal tract in 72 cases (18.8%), and nervous system in 50 cases (13.1%). The most of them, neonatal hyperbilirub- nemia was predominently in 55 cases. 12) According to the mean starting time in 46 survived cases by feeding types, tube feeding was 5. 4 days, combined feeding was 25.4 days, and oral feeding was 40.0 days after birth.
