Abstract
Chlorpromazine exerts important effect on the central nervous system. The actions of the chlorpromazine on the central nervous system are still not well understood although they have been studied extensively. The exact site of hypothermic action of chlorpromazine has not been determined. The present study was undertaken to determine central sites of body temperature regulation produced by injection of chlorpromazine into brain directly with #30 gauze needle in rabbits fixed in sterotaxic apparatus. Male rabbit of 1. 8kg. weight were used. Rectal temperature were measured using a thermometer. The rabbit were not starved before use, food and water were withheld during experiments. The results were as follows; 1.When 0. lmg of chlorpromazine was administered to the rabbit intramuscularly or intravenously, there was not any hypothermic action. 2.Same amounts of chlorpromazine didn’t show any significant hypothermic action when chlorpromazine was administered to the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, putamen and hippocampus. 3. Injection of same amount of chlorpromazine into the caudate nucleus, midbrain, amygdala, and posterior hypothalamus, however, showed significant hypothermic action. 4.Injection of chlorpromazine into anterior hytophalamus and preoptic area brought mild hypothermic action. In view of these drastic responses of chlorpromizine upon body temperature regulation, it is felt that chlorpromazine acts on many different portions of the brain for hypothermic action.
