Clinical Observation on Parathion Intoxication

Abstract
Between February 1959 and August 1960 10 cases of Parathion intoxication, were observed. 3 of which died and 7 of which recovered. Case Reports: Cases No. 1 and 2 : The intoxication was by 2the oral route in 2 cases. The first was a seven month old boy who licked the rind of an apple which was contaminated with par athion. An hour later symptoms of intoxication appeared and 2 hours thereafter the patient was treated and recovered. The second was a sixteen month old girl who developed symptoms of intoxication 30 minutes after she had nursed her mother's breast which was contaminated with a solution containing parathion was mistakenly used for a heat-rash lotion. Though the treatment was begun 30 minutes after the onset of symptoms, the patient died 10 minutes after treatment was started due to too servere an intoxication. Cases No. 3 and 4 were a brother whose under shirts, pants and blankets were sprayed with parathion in order to destroy bedbugs. The 11 year old brother died 12 hours after onset of symptoms. 4 hours prior to death he developed severe convulsions. He received no specific treatment. The 6 year old sister, however recovered under specific treatment. Cases 5to 10 were young members of families. Their ages were between 3 and 22 months. Their rooms had been sprayed with a parathion containing insecticide. The 22 month old boy died 1 hour after onset of symptoms and 10 hours after development of convulsions. The remaining 5 cases recovered due to early diagnosis and adequate treatment. As the first management it is important to change patient's wears and to clear whole body with soap. The :medical treatment consisted of massive oral and parenteral administration of atropine, campher, amicodin, 20% or 55% dextrose, physiological saline solution, blood transfusion, tranquilizers and vitamines
