Abstract |
This study was designed to assess the accuracy of pulsed wave Doppler echocardiographic
measurement of pulmonary blood flow(Qp), systemic blood flow(Qs) and the ratio of pulmonary blood
flow to systemic blood flow(Qp/Qs) to compare with Fick method.
Seventeen patients with ventricular septal defect, aged 10 months to 14 years, participated for this
study, and Doppler echocardiograghic examinations using the Aloka SSD-880 were performed.
Two dimensional Doppler echocardiographic measurements of pulmonary blood flow were
obtained by parasternal short axis view, and systemic blood flow by suprasternal notch view.
In all patients cardiac catheterizations were performed within 48 hours after examination of
Doppler echocardiography, and Qp, Qs, Qp/Qs ratio were calculated by using Fick method.
Problems encountered in some patients included turbulent blood flow, alising, difficulty in measur-
ing of pulmonary artery diameter by 2-D echocardiography and difficulty in obtaining of aortic blood
flow by pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography. Comparison of Qp, Qs, Qp/Qs ratio obtained by pulsed wave Doppler echocardiography and with those by Fick method was well correlated (correlation coefficient was 0.750 in Qp, 0.738 in Qs and 0.809 in Qp/Qs ratio).
