Purpose : Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major etiologic agent for pneumonia, meningitis, otitis media, and sepsis among young children. Multi-drug resistant strains have raised great concern worldwide, thus the importance of prevention with vaccines has been emphasized. However, vaccines may force the appearance of pneumococcal infections by nonvaccine serotypes. Thus, distribution of pneumococcal serotypes should be monitored to estimate vaccine... |

Purpose : Haemophilus influenzae, one of the normal flora of the upper respiratory tract, can cause such infections as otitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, and meningitis in children. The oropharyngeal flora has therefore mainly been analyzed as a reservoir for pathogens. This study was performed to reveal the colonization rate of H. influenzae in the upper respiratory tract, their biotypes, their antimicrobial... |

Purpose : Cryopreserved stem cells from cord blood are usually infused with Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) immediately after thawing. However, this process may cause cell damage due to osmotic shock, and the administration of DMSO may also cause toxic effects. We studied a new method of increasing cell viability by stabilizing osmolarity by adding dextran 40 and washing out DMSO.

Purpose : Aspirin(acetylsalicylic acid) has been used to treat unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction in adults and Kawasaki disease in children. The antithrombotic effect of aspirin was attributed to its ability to inhibit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet cyclooxygenase, which leads to decreased thromboxane synthesis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect on the platelet aggregation... |

Transient myeloproliferative disorder has been reported in infant with Down's syndrome during
neonatal period.
This is clinically and hematologically indistinguishable from congenital acute leukemia. In contrast
to congenital leukemia, complete clinical and hematological recovery occurs within weeks to months
of diagnosis without antileukemic treatment.
A neonate presented with jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly and mongoloid face was diagnosed as
Transient myeloproliferative disorder.
We report this case with a review of... |

Herpes simplex virus infection in the newborn is generally thought to be associated with a grave prognosis
in terms of mortality and severe neurologic sequelae among survivors. Most neonatal herpes infection are
due to type 2 herpes virus hominis, acquired either by ascending infection from the mother’s genital area to the intrauterine infant after premature rupture of membrame, or by... |
