Abstract
A group of 30 cases (including newborns mostly) of hyperbilirubinemia without any correlation to age or etiologic disease was studied and the relationship between the bilirubin level of the serum and that of the CSF was observed. 1.There was no definite correlation bilirubin level in between serum & that of C.S.F. 2.Some correlations between level of protein and bilirubin of CSF were observed. Many of the cases which have high level of bilirubin of CSF represent significant elevation protein level of the CSF, So we suggest that elevation of the protein level of the CSF can serve as an index of potential danger of the developing kernicterus in hyperbilirubinemia because it has been well known that elevation of protein level of CSF is parallel to the degree of the immaturity of blood brain barrier. 3.There was no great difference of the bilirubin level in CSF in various different etiologic disease which can cause jaundice such as ABO incompatibility, septicemia, physiologic jaundice, prematurity and other hepatic pathology. 4.Comparing the bilirubin of the CSF of corresponding age group, no difference was noted level of bilirubin and in it’s fractions. 5. We reviewed many other factors contributing to develop kernicterus except hyperbilirbinnemia, such as immaturity of blood brain barrier, hypoxia, liver dysfunction, hypoglycemia, PH and organic anions etc.
