Abstract
Clinical bacteriological studies on 73 cases of shigellosis in infants and children were made from September, 1968 to March, 1970 in Pediatrics department of Fusan National University Hospital. 1.Age incidence showed under 1 year to be most commonly affected (35 cases, 47. 9%), among this age group neonatal infants were 4 cases and the youngest patient was a 4 day-old age. 2.Sex distribution showed 46 cases(63.1%) in maleand 27 cases(36. 9%) in female. 3.Seasonal incidence was most common in Summer 46 cases(71. 9%) and 3 cases in Winter. 4.In bacteriologic study, Shigella flexneri were most common which were cultured from 43 cases (58 .9%) and next Shigella dysenteriae. 5.In sensitivity test, Ampicillin were most sensitive(80%) and next Kanamycin(66.6%), Neomycin(64. 5%) in order. Erthromycin, Chloramphenicol, Streptomycin, Tetracycline and Leuk omycin were resistant in 60 to 70%. 6.In 28 of 35 cases treated with Ampicilliin, stool culture were carried out, and 25 of 28 cases conversed to negative culture within 2 to 3 days. 7.of 73 cases died and 2 cases of these were under 1 year of age.
